En el artículo de hoy, hablaremos con María Trigo, diseñadora y animadora 2D. María Trigo presentó su último cortometraje al festival Jóvenes Realizadores de Granada y hoy, nos contará un poco sobre su proceso. ¡Disfrutad!

My name is Maria. I’m an animation film maker. First, I actually studied graphic design but then I was moving to Germany and I studied animation at the film university Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF, a very long name. And there I made my first short film, which was actually my bachelor film called Inside Me. It was an animated documentary about a woman who had an abortion. At the time I was working at the TV station, but then the film was quite successful, so it allowed me to continue making films. Then, I moved back to Portugal and I did my second film, which is this one, and it’s my first professional film. Which I made with AIM Creative Studio and with Wait a Second Films. I was also doing a little bit of graphic design work, but my main work is working on my films. 

• Mi nombre es María y soy animadora. Realmente, he estudiado diseño gráfico pero cuando me mudé a Alemania, comencé mis estudios en la Universidad de cine Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF, un nombre bastante largo. Realicé mi primer cortometraje llamado Inside Me. Fue un documental animado sobre una mujer y su aborto. En ese momento, estaba trabajando en la televisión, sin embargo, la película tuvo bastante éxito y eso me permitió seguir realizando más.

  
  

  Más tarde, me mudé a Portugal, donde realicé mi segundo cortometraje, que se convirtió en mi primer trabajo profesional. Lo hice con AIM Creative Studio y con Wait a Second Films. Mientras, también realizaba algunos trabajos relacionados con diseño gráfico, pero lo principal era trabajar en mis películas.

Can you talk about the idea of your short film "It shouldn't rain tomorrow"? 

¿Puedes contarnos un poco sobre la idea de su nuevo cortometraje "It shouldn't rain tomorrow"?

Some years ago, I started thinking about this film because my grandmother was very old and sometimes we were with her, but it didn’t really feel like she was there. Then, I was questioning myself in general when someone with dementia, like when they aren’t there, Where are they? I was thinking to make a film to explore that. But then I realized it was probably a bit too abstract. While writing I added the daughter. And then the story became a lot more about the two of them and their relationship. Also, while I was thinking about the idea, I saw this on TV. Someone was talking about diving. I don’t remember the name, but when you dive without air, it was very, very cool the way she was describing how you kind of have to surrender and relax to be able to do it well, to be underwater without air. So the water, I think that’s why then the water ended up also being an idea for the film. I also read in some text that in Japanese Buddhism, we are like a vessel. When we are young, the water pours in. And when we are starting getting older, the water slowly pours back again. I thought that was a beautiful image and metaphor. I tried to use the water as this representation of this in between world, so to say, where the old mother is. 

• Años antes, comencé a pensar sobre esta película. Mi abuela es bastante mayor y algunas veces estamos siempre con ella, pero no se nota que ella esté también con nosotros. Estuve haciéndome preguntas sobre las personas que padecen demencia, porque cuando están ausentes, ¿Dónde están?. Y pensé en hacer una película sobre esto. Al principio, pensé que a lo mejor iba a ser demasiado abstracto. Mientras estaba escribiendo, añadí la figura de una hija a la historia. Así, la historia comenzó a ser más sobre la relación entre ellas. También, mientras estaba pensando en la idea, vi algo en la televisión. Alguien hablaba sobre el buceo. No recuerdo el nombre pero, cuando buceas sin aire, es muy guay la manera en la que describen cómo tienes que sobrevivir y relajarte para poder hacerlo bien, el estar bajo el agua sin aire. Esto me generó una nueva idea para la película.

  
  

  También leí un texto japonés sobre el budismo, somos como una vasija. Cuando somos jóvenes, el agua se derrama. Pero cuando vamos creciendo, la vasija se vuelve a llenar lentamente. Pensé que sería una bonita imagen y metáfora. Intenté utilizar el agua como una representación de dónde están las personajes mayores con demencia, en el caso de la película, lo que le ocurre a la mujer mayor.

What was the most difficult thing during the process of your short film? 

¿Qué fue lo más difícil durante el proceso del cortometraje?

There were different kinds of difficulties, especially it was hard for me that it was my first short film. And so I felt a lot of pressure because it’s a great opportunity to have funding to make a film. I wanted to use this opportunity really well. That created a lot of pressure. It was difficult for me, it’s hard to close things, to make everything very clear. In preproduction, I like to discover the film as I go. So we were already animating the film and I didn’t yet know exactly what is the final look. We were already doing the animation with charcoal, so that was clear. I knew I wanted to have color, but it wasn’t at some point still clear how it’s gonna work. So that was a bit tricky to be deciding that stuff in the middle of production. But it was my own fault, so to say. And it was hard at some point. I had no idea how long we still need to finish the film. We were a bit lost in the middle of the process. Working a lot, but not seeing the end of it. And yes, it was a big learning experience. 

• Hubo diferentes tipos de dificultades, especialmente fue bastante difícil para mi el que sea mi primera película. Había bastante presión porque es una gran oportunidad el tener patrocinadores para hacerla. Quería usar esta oportunidad muy bien. Y eso creaba bastante presión. Fue complicado para mi el hacer que todo el proceso estuviera claro. En preproducción, me gusta ir descubriendo la película durante el proceso. Cuando estábamos animando la película, todavía no sabía exactamente cual iba a ser el resultado final. Estábamos animando con carboncillo, eso sí lo tenía claro. Sabía que quería que tuviera color, pero a este punto todavía no sabía como añadírselo. Fue un poco complicado decidir este tipo de cosas en mitad de la producción. Aunque fue mi culpa, fue difícil de gestionar en ciertos momentos. No tenía ni idea cuanto tiempo más necesitaríamos para terminar la producción. Trabajábamos mucho, pero no veíamos el final todavía. En resumen, fue toda una experiencia de aprendizaje.

Can you tell us your inspirations for making the short film?

¿Puede decirnos sus inspiraciones para realizar este cortometraje?

I talked already a bit about the idea in number two. I can also talk about some technical inspiration or artistic inspiration. Was not really William Kentridge and his animation technique with the charcoal, which I always admired. And the freedom that I feel in his films because it’s just this continuous drawing. But I think this question is actually what I answered in number two.

• He mencionado un poco esta idea en la pregunta dos. Puedo hablar también sobre inspiraciones técnicas o artísticas. Puedo mencionar a William Kentridge y su animación técnica con carboncillo, el cual, siempre he admirado. Y la libertad que siento al ver sus películas porque siempre aparece ese dibujo continuado tan característico suyo.

Do you participate in other projects like this one?

¿Has participado en otros proyectos como este?

Not so much, no. I’m now working on a new film of my own again, which probably will be called Man and Dog. It’s about power dynamics in relationships. It’s a tragic comedy. It will be animated with ink on paper. And we are starting production. Well, we are in production right now, and hopefully the film will be done next year.
